NZ republic inevitable says Governor-Genral

The Governor-General, Sir Jerry Mateparae, believes New Zealand becoming a republic is inevitable.

Speaking to Māori Television’s Native Affairs, Sir Jerry said while it may not occur in the foreseeable future, it would happen.

“I guess it’s inevitable.  All of these things are inevitable.  So it’s a matter for the country to decide at some later date,” said Sir Jerry.

Nor did he believe a republic would damage New Zealand’s status.

“I don’t think it would have any relationship effect.  Already in the Commonwealth, there are republics, the Republic of Singapore.”

But Sir Jerry admitted it would challenge the present Treaty relationship between Māori and the Crown.

“I believe for Māori it will be a little more difficult.”
