NZ Secondary Schools to come together for The Big Sing 2015

New Zealand's premier secondary schools choir competition will take place tomorrow in Wellington's Michael Fowler Centre.

The Big Sing 2015 will consist of choirs ranging in size, from a 60-strong male choir from Auckland's Dilworth School, to the combined eight girls and eight boys choir from Christ's College and St Margaret's in Christchurch.

A total of 24 choirs will sing one item each, starting tomorrow night, August 13 at 6:30pm and will go through to August 15.

During past months, secondary schools from around the country have held their respective 'Big Sing' competitions.

Around 9000 singers in 259 choirs from 153 schools compete, however, only 24 teams make it through to the National Competition.

Just recently, the finale adjudicators were also named. They are Judy Bellingham, Carl Crossin, Michael Fulcher and Tanemahuta Gray.

Tanemahuta Grey is the artistic director of the cultural spectacle "Maui- One Man Against The Gods."

In 2010 he directed and was one of the choreographers for the Oceania section of the Shanghai World Trade Expo Opening Ceremony.

He was also the artistic director of Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Society's stage production "Arohanui-The Greatest Love" performed during the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

All together, there are three categories of musical styles at this year's national event. They are, New Zealand Composition/Arrangement, including Māori and Pasifika, Classical Composition and Other Styles such as folk, spiritual and gospel.

Yesterday, The New Zealand Choral Federation announced that Māori Television will air live-stream footage and will also film behind the scenes of the competition, conduct interviews with the adjudicators, conductors and singers to produce a series of programme highlights to be shown at a later date.
