Olympics Rio Day 3 - Silver for womens sevens

It was an eventful day three at the Olympics for the New Zealand with one of our sides taking silver.

Silver for NZ Women’s Sevens

Kayla McAlister (Te Ātiawa) scored the first try against Australia but it wasn’t long before their rivals came back with a controversial try.  Portia Woodman received a yellow card before the second half. It was clear to see it was a silver medal for NZ in the final minute. Final score 24-17.

Red card overturned for Ngāpuhi captain

Football Ferns captain Abby Erceg of Ngāpuhi has been cleared to play France in their Olympic match after Fifa overturned her controversial red card in the Ferns' pool match against Columbia.

Loss for Black Sticks

The Women's Black Sticks lost their match against Germany, despite starting off strong. Final score: 2-1.

Ngāti Porou’s judo Olympian moves up in rank

In Women's Judo, Ngāti Porou's Olympic debutante Darcina Manuel proved tough competition taking out world ranked No.24 Irina Zabludina of Russia. But round 16 proved too much for Manuel who was defeat by seasoned Portuguese Telma Monteiro. Manuel takes ninth place.

Money on NZ Equestrian team to win gold

In equestrian sports, the New Zealand three-day eventing team is in good stead for what could be New Zealand's first gold. New Zealand came back from sixth in the dressage to place second behind Australia after Mark Todd, five-time Olympic medallist, Clark Johnstone and Jonelle Price gave three flawless cross-country rounds. Tomorrow, they compete in the final event of show jumping.
