Over 30,000 expected to attend Waitangi Day celebrations

More than 30,000 people are expected to converge in Waitangi tomorrow to celebrate 176 years since the signing of the treaty.

There will be a range of free events throughout the day for all to enjoy.

A dawn ceremony will be held on the upper treaty grounds at 5am, followed by the flag raising ceremony.

A number of stalls are expected to open at 10am selling food, art, clothing and crafts.

Children’s fun rides and various activities including a bouncy castle will be available from 10am as well.

From 10.30am through to midday, the public are able to enjoy performances by the Whangarei Brass Band, the New Zealand Youth Choir and the Royal Navy Band.

Northland kapa haka groups Hātea and Te Pū Ao will be performing in the afternoon.

Musical acts will perform throughout the day including top Māori artist Anika Moa. Reggae, Jazz, RnB, rock and funk acts. Hip-hop dance crews will also be performing.

Waka will be on the water throughout the day, including the world’s largest ceremonial canoe, Ngātokimatawhaorua.

Stalls are expected to close at around 4pm.
