Perth Police attempt to close down tent embassy on Heirisson Island

The occupants of the Tent Embassy on Heirisson Island were confronted by Police yesterday in a heated exchange which led to claims of excessive force used against one of the protestors.

According to reports, 3 people were arrested in the encounter which included two elders and Police dismantled tents and removed equipment from the area.

Occupants at the Tent Embassy have been there for months attempting to deal with their own land rights issues as well as protesting the closure of hundreds of remote Aboriginal Communities in Western Australia.

Photos of Police arriving at the Tent Embassy yesterday were posted on the Blackfulla Revolution Facebook Page and Nine News Perth  reported on the event speaking with shaken occupants of the camp during and after the confrontation.

The event occurred on the eve of protests organised around the world for the 2nd Call To Action Against the Closure of Aboriginal Communities.

States across Australia, Berlin, Los Angeles, London and New Zealand have organised events for the cause and are calling for supporters to unite and condemn the impending closures.

The Premier of Western Australia, Colin Barnett announced last year that the State would no longer provide funding for a number of remote Aboriginal communities which was supported by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

The Minister of Māori Development, Te Ururoa Flavell posted on social media that he will attend the 2nd Call To Action against the Closure of Aboriginal Communities event organised tonight at the Britomart station in Auckland with Tame Iti.

Meanwhile the Māori Party co-leader, Marama Fox will be in Melbourne participating in events there and speaking with Indigenous representatives. A number of Politicians are expected to attend gatherings around New Zealand to show their support.
