Playhouse auction to support homeless efforts by Te Puea Marae

Students at Maungawhau School are busy decorating a Wendy house to be auctioned off for charity next week. The miniature playhouse, donated by the Harcourts Mt Eden branch, was dropped off today. They hope their additions will enhance the small dwelling's appeal because all proceeds earned under the hammer will be donated to Te Puea Marae.

Harcourts Mt Eden sales consultant Kirstin Elia told Te Kāea, “All funds will be going to Te Puea marae to help assist with the clothing, feeding and obviously housing some of the people that have been living in cars. So we saw that as a worthy cause because it helps many people not just one or two.”

Maungawhau School students were excited about their special delivery this morning.

“It's really nice and it would be good for the homeless children to play in at the marae,” says 10-year old Matthew Radcliffe.

“The best part of it is how much space is in it so even we can stand up in it,” says 10-year old Zain Ismail.

“It would be a real cool place to just draw and that kind of stuff, “says 11-year old Miranda Wiseman.

The house given today is one of three houses Harcourts has built to be auctioned off for three different charities. The children will now decorate it before it is sold for Te Puea Marae.

“We're going to paint some bush scenes for New Zealand and some dots and some other patterns,” says 10-year old Hannah Ellis-Ducobu

“It would be cool if we had some koru and some different languages of words like welcome and stuff,” says Miranda.

The team at Harcourts Mt Eden would like to see the house sell for at least $5000.

Harcourts Mt Eden realtor Lorraine Marshall says, “What we'd like to happen as well is perhaps through the money that was raised if there was a corporate out there that it would want to offer to give it back to the marae for the children there.”

A Givealittle page is open for donations for those who won't be bidding. The auction will be held next Thursday night at the Mt Eden Bowling Club. Contact the Harcourts Mt Eden branch for more information.
