PM and Gov-Gen to be challenged at upcoming Waitangi celebrations

The speaker for Te Tii Marae at Waitangi says a pending challenge lies ahead for the Governor-General and the Prime Minister at Waitangi this year.

The challenge being whether either of them agrees that the Declaration of Independence and the Treaty of Waitangi is alive and relevant today.

The question was also asked whether there were any concerns from the home people of Te Tii Marae this year about who would lead the Prime Minister on to their marae.

2014 also marks 10 years since the Foreshore and Seabed hīkoi.

There have also been concerns about the seabed around the Govt's oil exploration agenda, in particular its schedule for Te Reinga Basin, will be heard this year as well.

It's not known when the upcoming hīkoi will depart Te Rerenga Wairua as yet, but plans are currently underway.
