Principal urges students to learn safety tips after abduction

Keeping Ourselves Safe is a police programme which runs in schools throughout NZ.  Bruce McLachlan, principal of Swanson Primary School says it's vital that children know and understand how to keep themselves safe following the abduction and sexual assault of an 11-year-old boy in Ranui.

Police detectives are still investigating the recent abduction and sexual violation of a young boy at Ranui train station.

Following the recent abduction and sexual assault of the 11-year-old there have been two other children that have reported incidents to police.

Children needing to know and understand how to keep themselves safe is a message that Bruce McLachlan, principal of Swanson Primary School is intent on reinforcing.

“The messages that we teach kids if they are out in the community are [to] always be with a mate, don’t be on your own.  Those are the basic messages,” says McLachlan.

“If someone approaches you there is nothing wrong with shouting and making a scene if someone is making your feel uncomfortable.”

No arrest has been made and the police investigation is on-going.  Anyone with information is asked to call police or the Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
