Quakes felt throughout Central NZ

9:30pm:

Police have closed off some areas in Wellington's CBD; including parts of Featherston Street, Wakefield Street and Bolton Street.

Civil Defence is advising people to stay home and avoid any unnecessary travel.

Wellington Airport has been re-opened but there are delays with the backlog of flights.

Wellington's Rail network has been closed until further checks have been made.

One injury has been reported.

7:30pm:

Police are warning the public to stay out of Wellington's CBD for fear of falling debris.

6:00pm:

Central NZ has been experiencing quake activity late this afternoon with the strongest quake measuring at 6.5 on the Richter Scale.
