Rotorua-based Fijian woman relieved family are safe

A Rotorua-based Fijian woman Alexis LewGor is relieved her family are all safe after Cyclone Winston hit Fiji.  Her family lives on one of the main islands Viti Levu, which was severely affected by Winston.

After returning from Wellington last night she spoke to her sister who lives in their family home in Lautoka.

“She said that they were still preparing for the onslaught when the Fijian news told them that Cyclone Winston was over."

LewGor’s immediate family consists of 44 people spread out across the two main islands of Fiji. She also has extended family living on the outer smaller islands.

“Social media played a huge part keeping me up to date on what was happening with my family based in Fiji.  This morning my other sister who lives in Nadi said that there is debris everywhere and roads remain closed,” says LewGor

Her only fear was where her family would go to if they were made homeless.

She hopes to return to Fiji in May to attend her family reunion, which will be held at her family home in Lautoka. During their reunion they will be visiting land that was gifted to her family by the Chief of the Village of Kese on the island of Naviti in the Yasawas.

LewGor is a member of the Rotorua Fijian Association. She is also the National President of NZ Federation of Multicultural Councils and has lived in New Zealand for 28 years.
