Silver Fern team to play at the World Cup named

Three big Māori names in netball have missed out on the Silver Ferns selections.  Catherine Latu, Joline Henry and Liana Leota all weren't named in the 12-strong team.

Despite this, the selectors opted for new blood including Kayla Cullen and Phoenix Karaka to play in the World Cup.

Te Kāea was at the announcement today before they prepare for the international competition.

Malia Paseka was all smiles today and there's no doubting why, as she was named the only new cap in the Silver Ferns squad today, as they prepare for the Netball World Championships.

Paseka says, “It’s such a privilege to be in the team.”  Jodi Brown says, “It’s always nerve-racking getting the call up seeing if you’ve made the team.”

Her selection came at the cost of Cathrine Latu, who has been demoted to the NZA team.

Waimarama Taumanu says, “To make decisions about long-serving players, that was difficult.”

Paseka is one of 12 players in the squad, and one of four shooters alongside Jodi Brown, Bailey Mes and Maria Tutaia.

Māori players Leana Leota and Joline Henry missed out on selection, and will be covered by World Cup debutante Kayla Cullen.

Cullen says, “I’m very excited to make the team!”

It was also an overwhelming moment for Captain Casey Kopua who came back from a knee injury last year.  The side only has 36 days before the start of the World Cup.
