Up-skilling opportunity for offenders

A young girl led the blessing of a home in Northland built by offenders at Ngāwhā prison, freeing it up to be inhabited by the family of John Constantino and Alma Futalan.

The home was built in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Northland, Northtec and Corrections with the aim of up-skilling offenders in preparation for the completion of their prison terms.

From building this home, 25 offenders have gained skills toward a level two national certificate in building construction, while seven offenders have gained skills toward a level two national certificate in painting and decorating.

It's hoped that this home building initiative will continue at Ngāwhā in the New Year.
