Sparks continue to fly over prison debate

The debate surrounding the issues within Mount Eden prison has sparked up once again today. This follows from the heated exchange between Labour's Kelvin Davis and the Minister of Corrections in the House yesterday.

Kelvin Davis didn't hesitate, he stuck to his guns and he didn't miss a beat in defending his actions in the House.

In addition, at the Law and Order select committee meeting today, Davis called for the CEO of Serco to come before the committee.

The Minister of Corrections got plenty of heat but still won't back down.  He says, “I was completely truthful in my comments about Serco.”

Davis was shredded in the House for making unsubstantiated claims, directed at Minister of Corrections Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga.

He talked in some detail about violence in prisons, especially at Mount Eden.

That prompted a request by the minister to review Serco.  But Kelvin Davis says that's just the icing on a very ugly cake.

He says, “That's weak! The truth won't come out of that piddling review.”

The Minister of Corrections was firing yesterday.  But today, it was as if he was stuck in quicksand.

Davis was fuming at National's refusal to have the CEO of Serco front for the select committee.  The review on Serco will last three months.
