Stage 5 of Ngāpuhi claims

The Waitangi Tribunal has been welcomed to Whangarei for the Stage 5 of hearing of claims of the wider Ngāpuhi region.

Songs of protest from early last century set the tone for the claims of the respective tribes of Whangarei to present their evidence before the Waitangi Tribunal this week.

It’s nearly three years since the tribes of Ngāpuhi claimed under the 1835 declaration of chiefs and the treaty that they never ceded sovereignty.  Yet they're still awaiting the Tribunal's report.

It’s said that the majority of lands taken unlawfully from the tribes of Whangarei has already been sold.  Hence the local tribes are passionate about seeking the justice they have long been denied.
