Study reveals racist attitudes towards Māori students

A study which looks at teacher expectations on success and ethnicity has been conducted as part of the completion of a Masters of Education degree.

Ngāti Ranginui descendent Hana Turner says that teacher training needs to be culturally responsive in order to combat racism towards Māori students as identified in the study, but Māori educationalists say this isn't a new issue.

Although the Govt has released its Māori Education Strategy 'Ka Hikitia' as well as an initiative to accelerate Māori secondary school student achievement under the Building on Success programme, Turner says more work still needs to be done and that view is also supported by Awanui Black, of the Iwi Leaders Forum Working Group on Education.

Minister of Education Hekia Parata, says Māori participation and achievement has increased and they will continue to focus on raising achievement for all students, Māori included.
