Tainui bid to settle claims

Waikato-Tainui are expressing their interests pertaining to Māngere mountain and other lands around Mt. Roskill that were left out of their 1995 Raupatu settlement.

But Auckland's local iwi collective says that Māngere Mountain is not being transferred at present.

Issues around not recognising Māori places names like Puketapapa or Mt. Roskill in the Bill was also a concern, as the National Geographical Board doesn't allow for place names to have more than one name.

The purpose of the Bill is to restore ownership of certain mountains and islands to iwi of Auckland, but only time will tell whether their proper place names will be acknowledged and whether Waikato-Tainui's bid will lay on deaf ears.
