There are huge concerns for Mangere iwi, Te Akitai Waiohua as the Pukaki Cemetery is nearly full to capacity and they're running out of land to bury their deceased.
Bones unearthed by recent airport developments have been interred at Pukaki, and with more developments expected, a solution must be found soon.
Chair of Te Akitai Waiohua, Karen Wilson says "The long standing concern is we have little or no room in our urupa so the digging up of many kōiwi 2 or 3 years ago has meant that they lay here at the moment but there is no room"
Further runway developments are expected in the near future which has heightened concerns for Te Akitai Waiohua.
Te Akitai Waiohua are now at the start of a long journey to finding their own solutions, and looking at options and avenues available to them in order to rectify this dilemma.
