Te Arawa Kapa Haka Regionals - Ngāti Rangiwewehi

Ngāti Rangiwewehi have made a strong bid today to qualify for the Te Matatini Festival being next year. In 2014 Ngāti Rangiwewehi was one of the 6 groups who qualified for Te Matatini after placing 4th at the Te Arawa regionals.

Securing a place in the top 5 would be particularly signifficant for the group this year as the last time Ngāti Kahungunu hosted Te Matatini in 1983, Ngāti Rangiwewehi won the supreme award.

Ngāti Rangiwewehi dedicated their performance this year to those who have passed away, their hau kainga and the concept of aroha.

The group is led by Dan Vaka who also carries the role of kaitātaki tāne and Hiria Vaka is the kaitātaki wahine.

Today Ngāti Rangiwewehi have chosen to share their Waiata-ā-ringa titled 'Tangi ana te whēoro.'

The groups leader Dan Vaka describes this waiata as 'He waiata ngaringari i te iwi o Rangiwewehi' he also adds the message they want to share through this waiata is "Kua tangi te pīpīwharauroa- he mahi kei te haere."
