Te Arawa Kapa Haka Regionals - Te Hikuwai

Dedicated to maintaining “Te Mana o Pikiaorangi”, Te Hikuwai was first in established 2009 and are linked to the Te Arawa hapū of Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Tamateatuatahi, Ngāti Kawiti, Ngāti Hinekura and Ngāti Rangiunuora.

The group in made up of both beginners to experienced performers and will be lead on stage today their kaitataki tāne (male leader) Arapō Whata and kaitataki wahine (female leader) Rangipo-Puti Wallace-Ihakara.

Te Hikuwai has chosen to share a Mōteatea (chant) written by Komia from Ngāti Hinekura, titled “E tama puta kino”.

The composition talks about the genealogical links between Ngāti Pikao and Tainui, and also highlights the importance of their identity ‘Pikiaorangi’.
