Te Whānau o Waipareira create alternative sports platform for youth

Te Whānau o Waipareira Trust have created 'Tū Kaha' as a platform for those who have missed out on regional teams. More than 80 teams took part in the rugby league, netball and basketball sports day.

The sport event Tū Kaha consists of three major sports, rugby league, netball and basketball with their own version of three aside.

However this particular event caters to those who have missed out in making rep teams throughout the Auckland Region.

Donovan Buspy, Kaimahi says, “This will be the second year for our rangatahi and what it's about those who may not get the opportunity to showcase their skills at a representative level this is an opportunity for them to rub shoulders with those who maybe representatives as well.”

Although Māori issues are the priority with Te Whānau o Waipareira Trust, Tū Kaha is a platform that also assists with our pacific island neighbours.

Donovan says, “All our rangatahi are included in this and it doesn't matter whether you are Māori or not it's all about supporting each other in this community.”

This is like a multi-cultural competition for teenagers and to show case their talents.

Tū Kaha's goal is to re-introduce these teams into Pā Wars and the Waikato Coronation with the aim of continuing on with a legacy that has helped shape this community in West Auckland.
