Canada’s first indigenous Attorney General and Minister of Justice Jody Wilson-Raybould says there are too many Māori and First Nation’s people in jail – and she wants to do something about it.
“There are similar realities in our countries,” she told Native Affairs during a recent week-long visit to Aotearoa.
Spending a day in Taneatua, Minister Wilson-Raybould says that she wanted to look at the justice process in both countries and find ways to prevent indigenous peoples from being sent to jail.
“I want to see if we are making appropriate investments to improve the system.”
One of her tasks as a Canadian justice minister is to co-lead an enquiry into murdered and missing Indigenous women.
“We are looking into the operation of institutions to understand how the impact of the uneven hand of justice has on the reality of individuals in the system.”
