Training consortium expected to create opportunities for rangatahi

A training consortium which was created through the partnership of local and government agencies has now provided a new pathway for Māori and Pasifika people between the ages of 18-34 become qualified in trades.

Young Māori and Pacifika people are able to apply for scholarships through the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic which covers the fees component of the programme of study and support to find work placements.

Ngā Potiki Trustees are excited by the announcement, believing it will create much needed opportunity for rangatahi within the region.

According to Bay of Plenty Polytechnic of Education and Māori Development Director Kieran Hewitson, “Our economic success depends on increasing the skill levels and opportunities of Māori and Pasifika, who will make up a large part of our national workforce in the future.”

Scholarships will be offered in carpentry, automotive technology and electrical engineering. Courses are designed to help students develop their skills to enable them to sign up for an apprenticeship.

More information on the announcement will be presented at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic tonight and next Tuesday.

Northland based Te Matarau offered a similar initiative focused on getting youth into employment which included the involvement of local tertiary institutes, Northland Polytech.   The news story can be viewed below.
