This year's winner of the Māui Tikitiki-a-Taranga Māori Sports Administrator of the Year award was given to Trevor Shailer (Ngāti Kauwhata, Ngāti Hauti).
Shailer is the current CEO of Sport Manawatu and was the Deputy Chef De Mission at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
He managed the interface with athletes and team members at the Olympics to ensure our athletes had every chance of success. This included developing the athlete's connection with home, strengthening their sense of belonging through key rituals and stimulating the wairua of the New Zealand contingent.
Tonight Shailer was up against Waka Ama New Zealand's Marinna Millanta and Harko Brown, who has been instrumental in the revitilisation of Ki-o-rahi in Aotearoa.
Shailer is no stranger to the sporting world. He competed in boxing at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. He also won a bronze medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria.
Born in Levin, Shailer is employed at the Health Sponsorship Council and has been part of the NZOC Maori Advisory Group.
