UNICEF calls for end to poverty in NZ

Currently one in three Māori children live in poverty in NZ and the international child rights advocacy organisation UNICEF are urging politicians both in and out of Government to work together to put an end to these stats.

Billie Jean Simon, a Māori solo parent is saying that despite trying her best to get herself and her family out of poverty there just isn't enough support.

The one job she had managed to secure since having her two girls was being a factory worker where sometimes she was expected to work a 12-hour shift.

Due to childcare issues she returned to the DPB.  Now she lives off no more than $20 on any given week left after paying the bare necessity bills of rent, power and basic food.

Deborah of UNICEF says all politicians need to work together and pleas for better support from the wider community.
