A stalwart of the Tūhoe Festival, Tiwi Black, was farewelled today from his ancestral home, Ōhotu in Ruatoki with over 500 people attending his funeral.
He was well-known for his work in communities in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. He was also a keen sportsman and farmer.
Nikora Taipeti says, “He helped them realise their aspirations in all issues, from turning the ground to farming, all for the preservation of the families.”
Tiwi Black returned to Ōhotu Marae on Tuesday following his death.
Just across the road from this marae, he worked as a farmer. During the funeral, people acknowledged his giving nature.
“I can say he was one who grew those aspirations. He didn't only think about his own family but carried that through with his people,” said Taipeti.
Tiwi Black also played a major role in establishing the Tūhoe Festival. He was acknowledged for making major decisions before, during and after the festival.
Tiwi Black died at the age of 85, he's survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
