The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management has reported minor eruptive volcanic activity is currently being monitored at Whakaari (White Island).
The Volcanic Alert Level has risen now from Level 1 to Level 3.
The current activity is minor but GNS Science says they are unsure of the implications for visitor safety.
They will be issuing a Volcanic Alert Bulletin to update the public later this afternoon.
