Whānau mourn loss of respected Māori educationalist

He was a social development worker and an educator, widely admired as a witty speaker. Danny Reweti Hona of Ngāti Awa, Tūhoe, Whakatōhea and Tūwharetoa passed away at his family homestead in Te Teko early this morning, aged just 56.

The former head boy of St Stephens College (Hato Tipene) worked passionately in youth development and Māori education.

He's held positions as a lecturer at Waikato Institute of Technology, as an HOD at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa in Manukau and as Programme Leader at Manukau Institute of Technology.

He was also Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Te Kura Māori o Ngā Tapuwae in South Auckland.

His body will be taken to lie among his people at Tuteao Marae in Te Teko tonight.  Funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed.
