Pacific Islanders have enjoyed a 3% rise in National Standards achievement, while Māori have only improved by about 1%.
The question is, why are Māori still failing?
Education Minister Hekia Parata says it has a lot to do with family involvement and drive to succeed, and she laid down a challenge to iwi.
