Wiremu Flavell confident Labour can take Tāmaki electorate

Education, Māori Youth and employment pathways are the three main issues Labour candidate Wiremu Flavell wants to push if he is selected to contest in the up-and-coming general elections.

Although only 28-years-old, Wiremu Flavell is currently the Head of the Māori Department at Rutherford College, who first started teaching in 2007.

He was elected as a member of the Local Henderson-Massey Board last year, and has also completed a Master in Education at Waikato University.

Last Monday, nominations for the Labour Tāmaki Makaurau candidacy closed. Wiremu Flavell and the former Head of the Māori and Pacific Unit at TVNZ, Shane Taurima were the only nominations received.

Although a date for the selection process and announcement for the Labour Candidacy has not been set, Te Kāea understands that the report into the investigation of Shane Taurima during his work at TVNZ is to be released tomorrow.

Although the Labour candidacy appointment process has been extended due to circumstances surrounding Taurima, Flavell says the time frame to campaign is tight but continues to believe no matter who the candidate, Labour will win the Tāmaki Makaurau electorate.
