Young touch players hope to catch selectors' eyes

The Junior National Touch Competition started today in Auckland, where teams from around the country represented their region in the Under 15 and Under 17 category.

Formally known as the Under 15 & Under 17 National Touch Championship, it is the second biggest tournament run by Touch New Zealand.

You can see why it’s such a huge event, with 6 grades on offer and teams competing in Boys, Girls & Mixed in Under 15 and Under 17 age levels.

The tournament is the pinnacle of Junior Touch in New Zealand and teams have already competed at their regional tournament, now taking on teams from the other regions.

Auckland U17 boys had their first game against Counties-Manukau today.

Silly mistakes cost Auckland in the first half and you could see Counties also wanted the win.  In the end both teams finished on 3 all.

Not only do the players want to do well for their region but also catch the eyes of the selectors.

The opportunity to be selected for New Zealand teams in each grade will be available to the players, with the New Zealand teams embarking on a tour to Australia later in the year.
